The intense cerulean blue of Meconopsis sheldonii

A trio of exotics....Dicksonia antartica, Rhododendron protistum and Sequoia sempivirens

Rhododendron 'Sappho', a beautiful old hybrid, parentage unknown but thought to date to before 1847.

Echium pininana, known as the tree echium. Native to the Canary Islands, but just loves it here on the Ards peninsula. It is much loved by the bees, and in the summer the noise of the bees around the plant is almost deafening!

Rhododendron falconeri, a Himalayan species.

The garden is at its best in spring, just before the beech leaves are fully out.

The aptly named Candleabra primula. Primula pulverulenta is native to Sichuan in China. It loves damp, even boggy ground and seeds itself profusely around the garden.

Erythronium californicum 'White Beauty' is now established in the garden and is a beautiful sight in the spring.

The green of the garden is lifted by a pop of colour from these acid yellow Candleabra primulas, Primula prolifera.

The unfurling tip of Wollemi nobilis, a conifer in the same family as the well known Monkey Puzzle. It was known only through fossil records until the Australian species was discovered in 1994 in New South Wales. It is critically endangered in the wild and is on the IUCN's Red List.

The slightly scented Rhododendron johnstoneanum, the hardiest of the Maddeni series.

An unfurling frond of Dicksonia antartica, the Australian Tree Fern. They always reminds me of a Bishop's crozier.

Rhododendron 'Tally Ho' is a hybrid of R. griersonianum and R. facetum. It flowers in early summer after the main flush of rhododendrons have finished flowering, so its always a particularly welcome sight.

The afternoon sun lights up the beautiful cinnamon coloured bark of Luma apiculata, the Chilean myrtle. It thrives in the mild climate of the Ards peninsula and seeds itself with wild abandon.

Huge scented trusses of the sweetly scented Rhododendron Loderi 'King George'.

Symmetry in nature, Dicksonia antartica, the Australian tree fern.

A young Wollemi nobilis, critically endangered in the wild.

Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Rex', or the Chinese Rice Paper plant is a spectacular and exotic looking plant with fabulous architectural leaves.

The dramatic leaves of Schefflera macrophylum, a spectacular exotic looking plant which will eventually make a small tree. Native to the mountain forests of Vietnam.
